National Aviation Day was established in 1939 by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and is observed on the date of Orville Wright’s birthday (his brother Wilbur had died in 1912). It celebrates the history, technological development, and marvel of aviation. So let’s celebrate, Oppo! Post your pics here, and I’ll bump it up a couple of times throughout the day.

A bunch of things that shouldn’t be able to fly doing a bunch of impossible things

It’s amazing that we went from people thinking that flight was impossible, to people thinking that flight across oceans is impossible, to having planes that can traverse the globe several times over. All in the last 150 years or so.

The pace of aviation development has been nothing short of remarkable. I’ve got a little post coming later this morning that helps to illustrate this. Basically, Orville Wright lived to see not only the first flight, but also the breaking of the sound barrier. We went from 6.8 mph to Mach 1 in 44 years.

Well, time to spam pictures from my phone! The deployment pictures will come after work since they're on my computer. For now, here’s a piece of history. An old CH-47D.

I toured a TXANG Chinook D at a recent air show. Pretty sure the airframe dated back to Vietnam, but the manufacturer plate was long gone.

Manufacturer plates are located in the cockpit. But there's a good chance that it was a rebuilt B model.

This is great, I’m going to the Air Force Museum this weekend to try out my Lubitel. Maybe, I should comment the photos here in a couple weeks when I get them back.

Correct. Got a quick look at that beast during my annual visit to Oshkosh.

The first one is my neighbor. He couldn’t drive through the flood waters earlier this week, so he just flew home. The following photos are from the
Oklahoma 45th Infantry Museum
.
This last one is my favorite in this group. My daughter is at the controls. This is my buddy’s plane and he let her do most of the work.

I heard a loud jet flying overhead just a few minutes ago. Must be pretty low, I thought. I got outside just in time to see the distinctive shape of an A-10 disappear behind the building. I was too slow to grab a picture, so here’s a nice wallpaper I found:

I'll just submit my profile picture. Taken 5 minutes after my first solo.

I'll update with more photos of the planes I've flown if I remember when I get home.
